It is true that a great number of pupils struggle to learn foreign languages these days and some people argue that foreign languages should not be a mandatory subject in schools. I strongly disagree with this view due to the great benefits children could gain from learning a second language.

First and foremost, learning a foreign language would significantly enhance pupils’ memory. When students are exposed to a completely new language, their brains absorb different types of information, from vocabulary items to complex grammatical rules. Also, learning a language rather than the mother tongue requires students to regularly recollect (nhớ lại)  and to apply the knowledge they have acquired into practice, thereby improving their memory dramatically. This is illustrated by the fact that most bilingual children develop sharper brain functions and memory strength. Clearly, the idea of forcing students to learn foreign languages is extraordinarily practical.

Additionally, students would greatly benefit from learning a foreign language in terms of job opportunities. A multitude of companies and organizations these days, especially in Asia, expect their staff to be fluent in another language. Obviously, language capabilities bring a huge competitive edge to those who are seeking a decent job with attractive salary. For example, in Vietnam, the average compensation/salary for an employee who achieves a high level of proficiency in English ranges from $1000 to $1200, which is dramatically higher than the average pay for typical white-collar workers. It is clear that the benefits associated with job prospects brought by foreign languages to students are undeniable.

In conclusion, I strongly contend that foreign languages should be encouraged in schools due to the tremendous positive consequences they offer to pupils.
