Some people think that university courses should mainly focus on future development rather than looking back at the past. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
People have differing views/ different views on the priority of university curriculum. From my perspective, courses in higher education should focus on both future developments and the past since they are equally beneficial/valuable for students and society.
On the one hand, the idea of incorporating content related to future progress in school training programs is widely welcomed for several reasons. One compelling reason for this belief is that future-oriented subjects equip students with essential knowledge and skills. In today’s fast-changing world, expertise in technology, artificial intelligence, and computer literacy is crucial for staying competitive in the job market. By gaining these skills, students can improve their employability and expand their career prospects. Furthermore, a future-oriented curriculum helps produce a high-quality and competent workforce, which plays a key role in driving innovation and economic growth.
Despite the need for future-focused education, I contend that studying the past remains an equally impactful component of higher education. History and politics rely on past events to provide valuable lessons, helping individuals and societies avoid repeating mistakes. Learning about past political conflicts, for example, allows future leaders to make informed decisions and prevent wars. Additionally, understanding history and cultural traditions helps preserve national identity and heritage, fostering a sense of belonging and unity. Without knowledge of the past, societies risk losing their cultural roots and repeating harmful patterns. Therefore, universities should ensure that historical studies remain a fundamental part of higher education.
In conclusion, considering the benefits of both aspects, I am convinced that tertiary education should invest in future developments while giving the past the same level of priority.
