Model answer
I was born and raised in this city so I guess I know every corner of the city. There is one tall building that I am particularly interested in, it’s a hotel that I had the opportunity to visit a while ago.
The hotel is situated downtown, close to the train station, and in a very busy area. This is a popular accommodation for tourists visiting the city and it also serves as a venue for weddings and big conferences.
It was constructed roughly 3 years ago, it’s a 30 storey-building and the outer of the entire building is made of glass. There are a lot of flowers and plants in front of the hotel so it really caught my attention the first time I saw it.
I have attended a wedding there once, all the halls and rooms are very well equipped with modern facilities: elevators, big-screen TVs, beautiful furniture, etc.
What triggers my interests in the building is the paintings, all the walls are filled with fine paintings from local artists. So, walking along the hallways made me feel like I was at an arts gallery. Also, there are a lot of flowers both inside and outside, which make the place very lively.
Part 3
What are the disadvantages of living in tall buildings?
There are some drawbacks to living in high-rise building, first and foremost, it’s the inconvenience of using elevators. You have to share it with other residents, and normally it’s crowded. Things could get worse when some elevators got broken.
Secondly, it could be a problem for some people who want to have pets because most tall buildings don’t allow people to have pets. And finally, limited gardening in tall buildings could be a huge disadvantage. People can only grow some vegetables/flowers on their balcony if they’re lucky to have one.
Do you think there will be more tall buildings in the future?
For sure, I believe this will be the trend in future. More and more people are moving to big cities to work and study. To accommodate the growing populations, the cities have to expand either horizontally or vertically, and it seems that the latter is more feasible. Therefore, high-rise buildings are the best solution for the development of cities in the future.
Why aren’t there many tall buildings in the countryside?
In the countryside, there is plenty of available and unused land, and most people prefer having their own houses with gardens and open spaces. Constructing tall residential buildings doesn’t benefit either the residents or the contractors.
Why do some people like to live in tall buildings nowadays?
There are some reasons to this, firstly, buying or renting an apartment in tall buildings is much cheaper than buying a house, especially in big cities. Also, most tall buildings are located downtown, which makes it very easy and convenient for residents to travel around. And last but not least, high rise buildings offer a unique privilege, it’s the amazing view from high above.
Does climate affect how houses are built?
Definitely, houses in different locations/countries are built differently to best fit the climate where they are. For example, it is useful to have a house raised up from the ground in wet climates. Houses in cold climates are insulated to reduce the heat loss, and central heating is installed to keep people warm during winter months.
